The coffee company Starbucks has filed a request with Evanston city offiicials to open a new shop at 1734 Sherman Ave.

The special use permit required for the new location is scheduled for a hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday evening.

The company already has a shop at 1726B Sherman Ave (marked with the number 3 on the image above from the company website) and — we’re just guessing here — but even though Starbucks has eight stores already in Evanston, we think the new store two buildings up the street will be a replacement for the existing one.

The hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the Civic Center. Whatever the ZBA decides, the final decision on the special use permit is up to the City Council.

The storefront at 1734 Sherman (shown in a Cook County Assessor’s office photo) has been vacant for several years.

  1. Yes, it’s a replacement store

I'm in the Sherman Avenue Starbucks often and sometimes chat with the manager. Yes, they hope to replace their current Sherman Avenue location with a larger one just up the street. The idea is to get more seating. They treat their customers well and do a good business, so I can understand why they'd want to expand.
