With COVID-19 positive rates climbing across Illinois, Gov. J.B. Pritzker today imposed new mitigation rules four metro area counties.

Evanston health officials reported 11 new COVID-19 cases among Evanston residents today. Statewide there were 3,714 new cases.

The new restrictions hit DuPage, Kane, Kankakee and Will counties — which are all above the 8% positive rate threshold that triggers the new rules — including a ban on indoor dining at bars and restaurants.

Already facing the new restrictions are the Southern Illinois and the northwest Illinois region.

The restrictions also cut the size limit on indoor gatherings to 25 from the current level of 50 in the rest of the state.

Suburban Cook County, the region that includes Evanston, is now at 6.1%, up from 5.3% a week ago.

Evanston’s seven-day positive rate is now 2.0%, up from 1.5% a week ago.

The seven-day positive rate statewide is now 5.5%, up from 4.5% a week ago.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported results of 59,077 tests today, up from Monday’s 48,684.

The IDPH reported tests of 370 Evanston residents today. It found nine positive cases for a positive rate of 2.4%.

The state now says Evanston has had a total of 1,301 cases.

The city now says Evanston has had a total of 1,305 cases. The city’s death toll from the pandemic increased by one today to 74. It was the first additional death here since Sept. 11.

Here are the latest seven-day positive rates for some other communities:

  • Chicago 5.7%, up from 4.3% a week ago.
  • Skokie 4.1%, up from 3.2% a week ago.
  • Wilmette 4.3%, up from 3.9% a week ago.

Chicago reported 642 new cases today for a total of 90,600. Its coronavirus death toll increased by two today to 3,019.

Suburban Cook County reported 717 more cases today for a total of 75,957 and three more deaths for a total of 2,350.

Those who died in Cook County today included a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 60s, a man in his 70s, and a women and a man in their 80s.

The state now has 340,875 COVID-19 cases, and it reported 41 more deaths today for a total of 9,277.

As of last night, 2,261 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 489 patients were in the ICU and 195 of those were on ventilators.
