Steve & Barry’s cuts back

Steve and Barry’s, the low-price clothing retailer that filed for bankruptcy protection in July, announced today that it’s closing five of its Chicago-area stores.

The company had planned to open a store in the Dempster-Dodge Plaza in Evanston, but those plans were placed on hold by the bankruptcy filing. There was no immediate word on what impact today’s development will have on plans for the Evanston store.

New owner BH S& B Holdings plans to close 40 percent of the 276 stores operating nationwide before the bankruptcy filing.

Area stores being closed include ones at Crossroads Shopping Center in Highland Park, Northland Plaza in Dekalb, Woodfield Commons in Schaumburg, Yorktown Center in Lombard and Randhurst Mall in Mt. Prospect.
