The Margarita European Inn in downtown Evanston holds a  ribbon cutting for its remodeled building tonight.

The 42-room boutique hotel at 1566 Oak Ave. has recently finished a major renovation project.

The Evanston Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Evanston and the Chicago's North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau are participating in the event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the hotel.

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl is scheduled to appear at the ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m.

In conjunction with the upgrade to the hotel's facilities the Margarita has also become part of the Ascend Collection of Boutique Hotels.

Last year, when Margarita owner Michael Pure sought a rebate of city hotel taxes to help finance the $2 million renovation project, the idea drew fire from one of his competitors, Dave Reynolds of the Homestead.

A city committee approved the request anyway, but Pure ultimately was able to secure full private financing for the project and didn't complete the request for city aid.
