800 Degrees pizza opens downtown

Customers and crew this noon at 800 Degrees.

The new 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria opened in downtown Evanston this noon.

With a worker handing out fliers in front of the store at 812 Church St. in the Sherman Plaza complex the outlet of the California-based chain managed to lure about 20 customers into the quick-serve restaurant in it's first hour of operation.

One of the first pizzas from the oven -- this one a Tropicale, made with pineapple, ham, basil and cheese.

The new restaurant's opening came a little over a year after plans for it were first announced.

Meanwhile, its closest quick-serve pizza competitor in town, Blaze Pizza at 1737 Sherman Ave., was running into complaints this week from leaders of student groups at Northwestern University, who said the shop was slow to make payments to them for fundraisers held at the restaurant.

Las Marias at 1639 Orrington Ave. today.

And, if you hadn't yet gotten around to checking out Las Marias, the Mexican restaurant that opened in June at 1639 Orrington Ave., it appears you may have missed your chance. The restaurant was dark this noon with no hours or menu posted, and the phone listed for the restaurant went unanswered.
