Food beat: Signs of the times

It's getting close to time for the new Colectivo Coffee shop to open in Evanston. The new signs went up on the on the former Radio Shack store at 716 Church St. Wednesday.

It was almost a year ago when the Milwaukee-based chain first sought city approval to set up shop at the busy corner, and the gut rehab of the space got underway in July.

Colectivo has been advertising jobs in the shop at $12 to $15 an hour and held "instant interviews" for would-be workers late last week.

The current goal is to have the shop open by the middle of this month.

New name and owners for Mexican dining spot

Owners of TuKo Cantina appeared before Evanston's Liquor Control Board Wednesday seeking a Class D license for the former Las Palmas site at 817 University Place.

Managing partner Le'Qoinne Rice and the other owners are also in the midst of converting a Wicker Park restaurant at 1938 W. Division to the TuKo Cantina theme.

That location is set to open next month. No date announced yet for the Evanston spot. Both are billed as having a modern Mexican-American menu.
