A new study claims Evanston is the 4th brainiest city in America -- edging out Cambridge, Mass.

The report, published in The Atlantic Cities, cites research from Luminosity, which bills itself as an online brain performance training program used by 2.4 million people.
All the top 10 places were college towns, with Stanford University in California coming in at the top of the list.
The report, by Richard Florida, notes that users of the Luminosity program likely skew toward more highly educated and affluent individuals.
Lumosity data scientist Daniel Sternberg said, "College towns tend to do well because education is correlated with cognitive performance. We've seen in our other research that those with advanced degrees tend to perform better cognitively throughout the lifespan."
The report says cognitive performance as measured by Lumosity is closely associated with several key dimensions of an area's level of innovation, skill and economic performance.

Whoa

How does that explain our mayor and city council?  Just joking.

Whoa

I think it was Freud who said, "There are no jokes."

Rank, Rated, Standings

Why should we be concerned about Rank?  I'm referring to the school board story.....but this story here is the perfect place for my commentary.  My point is this- I'm sure Evanstonians are pleased that we are "ranked" as smart, but we want to apparently teach our kids that ranks does not matter, rather, we are all winners and all the same all the time no matter what.
The school board just voted against ranking.  Its a fine line to teach our kids about "rank", but lets take a look at the real world outside the brainiacs of Evanston: here are some phrases we hear everyday....
"ranked" a best buy by JD Power and Associates
the 6th "ranked" Wildcats won again today....
"ranked" best in class by Consumer Reports
AP college "rankings" (a coveted position by alumni)
Best Buy has the Brand Rankings list.....do you want to buy the lowest ranked TV?
Do you want to know how Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods is doing?  You mean their "rank" don't you?  You can find it at officialworldgolfranking.com
1/4 of our newspaper is dedicated to sports- and of course we all look at team "standings" which is a synonym for rank.  Of course, just under standings is something called "player rankings"- everyday, 365 days per year.
"Illinois Begins First Bond Sale as Worst-Rated U.S. State"   this was a headline from Bllomberg on April 2nd 2013...I assume this means that this state is ranked last?
I guess if one were worried about performance or is a poor performer, it would be a good thing to ignore "rank" and standings.

Illinois "State Rank"

CNBC conducts an annual analysis and ranks all 50 US states on 10 criteria.
The 2013 results were released this week.

Sadly, Illinois comes out #37  (#1 is best and #50 is worse)
We do well on Infrastructure #5, and Technology & Innovation #5,  but poorly on Cost of doing business #44 and Economy #45
Rankings - we may choose to ignore them at ETHS, but they're a fact of life.
