New ranking places ETHS among top schools in state

The newly issued U.S. News & World Report "Best High Schools" rankings places Evanston Township High School at 27th in Illinois and 526th in the nation.

The publication dramatically revamped its rating scheme for this year to include more schools, making the scores not directly comparable to last year's, when ETHS was ranked 25th in the state.

The publication ranked 526 schools in Illinois and 17,245 nationwide.

Among the top 30 schools in Illinois in the U.S. News list, 20 were in Chicago suburbs. Those high-performing suburban schools had a median of 13 percent of economically disadvantaged students. At 40 percent, ETHS had the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students in that group.

The U.S. News website says the highest ranked public high schools were those that demonstrated outstanding outcomes in math and reading state assessments and college-level exams and showed a high graduation rate.

“I am so proud of the students at ETHS and all the teachers and staff who support our students’ academic and personal growth,” said District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon. “While many of the top-ranked high schools are selective enrollment schools, top-ranked ETHS is a comprehensive high school welcoming all students.”
