Woman's Club plans 60th annual benefit show

The first two weekends in March, the Woman’s Club of Evanston celebrates the 60th Anniversary of its annual benefit show with the production of “Cut, Clarity, Comedy… A Diamond Anniversary Show.”
Proceeds from this year’s production will go to fund the Expressive Therapy Program at Children’s Home + Aid’s Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Child + Family Center, which provides art therapy to boys and girls ages 6 to 14 who are struggling with severe emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues as a result of traumatic childhood experiences, such as abuse and neglect.
For this year’s benefit show, the WCE’s clubhouse will be transformed into a scene from the movie “Fame” as approximately 200 volunteers work in front of and behind the curtain to create the theatrical production.
The benefit show consists of 31 humorous song parodies on a variety of topics ranging from wizards and pigs, to bed bugs and cave dwellers. The benefit show is written, directed, choreographed, and performed by WCE members and friends. Approximately 1,800 people come to see the WCE’s benefit show each year.
Started in 1951 as a fashion show and revue by the WCE’s Young Woman’s Auxiliary, the benefit show has evolved into a beloved theatrical production that touches the lives of many people in need.
Since 1996, the WCE’s benefit show has raised money for one pre-selected beneficiary chosen each year by the WCE’s Contributions Committee, giving the show a bigger meaning and providing a focus for everyone who volunteers their time and talent. In 2010, the WCE’s benefit show, “The Age of Hilarious,” raised $38,000 for the Center for Independent Futures.
“The WCE’s benefit show is one of our oldest and largest fundraising projects,” says WCE president Tammy McKnight. “Each year, our club members and friends work side-by-side with our beneficiary to raise significant amounts of money for their worthy cause.”
“We are thrilled to have five staff members and three dedicated volunteers from Children’s Home + Aid in the cast for our Diamond Anniversary benefit show,” says Lucia Guridi, WCE benefit show producer. “They are contributing their time and talent to sing, dance, and write for the show. Additionally, children from the Rice Child + Family Center’s Expressive Therapy program are making some of our show props.”
"Our Expressive Therapy Program is an incredibly vital part of the work we do with children living at the Rice Center,” says Keith Polan, Director of the Rice Child + Family Center. “This program recognizes the power of artistic expression in the emotional healing process and empowers children to externalize their experiences in a positive way, using art, music, and movement."
