City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says the city’s three outdoor ice rinks at Ackerman Park, Baker Park and Dawes Park Lagoon are now in good shape for skating, and chilly temperatures should keep conditions good through the end of the month.
Bobkiewicz said he’s gotten several complaints from residents about the condition of the rinks.
Part of the problem, he says, has been the flux in temperature and part of the problem has been staff resources to keep up flooding and clearing the ice once the temperatures got consistently cold again.
Bobkiewicz says, “We have rearranged some staff responsibilities to make sure we keep the three rinks in good shape at least for awhile longer this winter. We may shorten the number of weeks we commit to outdoor rinks next year just so that we can assure that we have the allocated staff resources to keep them in best shape weather will allow.”

As one of the people complaining about the condition of the rinks, especially compared to NU’s and some of the surrounding towns, I want to thank the Mayor and City staff for their attention to this matter.

As soon as the Council finds out people like the park rinks, let alone the NU rink, they will surely decide to tax them and put them out of existence.
So keep their existence quiet.

99% of the sidewalks here in southeast Evanston are treacherously dangerous. In 24 hours I’ve heard of 3 people who have broken bones, falling on the icy sidewalks. Isn’t there something the City of Evanston can do to demand that the citizens ALL clean their sidewalks? What a mess and it’s only going to get worse.
