An Evanston city staff committee reviewed plans for building a new Walgreens store to replace the existing one in the Southport Plaza on Chicago Avenue this afternoon.
The project, as described by architect John Bradshaw, involves a new design for Walgreens, featuring a two-story wall of glass windows on the site at Chicago Avenue and Keeney Street.
The project, which also involves renovations to the other stores in the plaza, is scheduled to go before the Plan Commission on March 14.

The decision by Craig/Stevens Development Corporation of Northbrook to upgrade the plaza reportedly was sparked by plans for the 214-unit AMLI Residential apartment development that recently broke ground on land just north of the plaza.
Developer Monte Strusiner told the committee, “It’s the first time in my career that we’ve owned a property we built long enough to be tearing it down and rebuilding it.”
“I have to pinch myself,” Strusiner said, “but we’re excited about doing it, and we hope to be in the neighborhood for many years to come.”
