Evanston aldermen Monday are scheduled to vote on new contracts for the city’s firefighters and police sergeants that give the two groups pay increases for this year significantly above the inflation rate.
Both call for 3 percent gross wage increases for 2018, compared to a 2.11 percent increase in the consumer price index last year.
The police sergeants contract is a one year agreement for 2018 and also provides 24 hours of compensatory time off in return for agreeing to the one-year deal.
The firefighters agreement is retroactive to 2017, giving them a 2.75 percent increase for the last half of that year and 30 hours of compensatory time off as a one-time benefit for not receiving a pay raise for the first half of that year.
In both agreements the city also agreed to return vacation time that had been deducted in 2017 for a furlough day in exchange for the unions withdrawing grievances and complaints filed with the Illinois Labor Relations Board about that action.
