City seeks fix for buckled flooring at Fleetwood

The Fleetwood gym, before the moisture problems developed.

Evanston aldermen tonight are scheduled to approve a $26,600 contract with a consultant to come up with a solution to problems that have caused the gymnasium floor to buckle at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Center.

Public Works Director Dave Stoneback, in a memo to aldermen, says staff has taken several steps already to try to solve the problem and the consultant, Raths, Raths and Johnson, Inc., is proposing several additional measures.

The consultant, in a preliminary analysis, says the problems likely started last year when humidity control in the building was interrupted during HVAC work. During that time the floor was sanded and refinished, which likely trapped high moisture levels in the refinished floor.

RRJ says that problem caused relatively minor and repairable buckling of the floor.

But then, more recently, RRJ says, the gym floor flooded, providing "an opportunity for a large volume of water absorption in the wood materials," which Stoneback says has left the floor severely buckled and unsafe for sports play.
