Three Evanstonians have announced they’re planning to run for seats on the City Council in next spring’s election.
Carolyn Murray hopes to succeed the retiring Delores Holmes as 5th Ward alderman, and she’s announced plans for a campaign kickoff event from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Center, 1655 Foster St.
Murray, whose 19-year-old son Justin was murdered in November 2012, is a long-time activist in the community who organized a gun-buyback program and an assault-weapons ban.
Mark Sloane, of 2512 Hartzell St., is planning a third run for 6th Ward alderman, now that Mark Tendam, who defeated Sloane in 2009 and 2013, is planning to run for mayor.
Sloane, a certified public accountant, served on a city budget task force in 2009 and a School District 65 budget panel in 2011. He also was a long-time member of what’s now the city’s Parks and Recreation Board.
Shawn Jones, an attorney and reporter for the Evanston RoundTable, is seeking to replace Brian Miller as 9th Ward alderman, now that Miller is running for mayor.
Jones was one of several residents who sought appointment to the aldermanic position last year after Coleen Burrus resigned.
Would-be candidates have until Dec. 19 to file petitions to enter any of the municipal or school board races up for election next April.
Except in the 5th, 6th and 9th wards, it appears all the incumbent aldermen plan to run for re-election.
