The City of Evanston has established a new sanitation fee structure that will increase the cost of 95-gallon refuse carts from $14.95 per month to $17.95 per month, effective in January.

Residents with 95-gallon carts will see the change reflected on their bills in March 2014. The monthly fee for the 65-gallon carts will remain the same, at $7.95.

The fee is collected as part of your bimonthly water bill.

The price difference is designed to decrease the amount of waste generated by the city and encourage residents to reduce, reuse, and recycle, a news release from the city said.

To help determine the size of your refuse cart, look at the serial number located on the front. The 65-gallon carts start with “65G” and the 95-gallon carts start with “95G”.

The 95-gallon cart is 46 inches tall and 29 inches wide, while the 65-gallon cart is 41 inches tall and 27 inches wide.

To avoid the increased fee, the city welcomes residents to downsize to a 65-gallon cart by Tuesday, Dec. 31. Requests can be made by calling 3-1-1, or it can be done online.

If residents exceed the capacity of the 65-gallon cart repeatedly, then they will automatically be upgraded to a 95-gallon cart and charged the increased monthly fee, the release said.

  1. I believe that I’ll switch to
I believe that I’ll switch to the 65 gallon model and buy a trash compactor. I just looked up the price of a better than average compactor and it is a lot of money. Also, reliability is not that great.

I think I’ll try the 65 gallon can, without the compactor, and hope for the best.

  2. me too
I believe I’ll be switching as well. Previously I waited until my cart was completely full to save the men a needless pick up so I put it out every three weeks or so. With the smaller cart I’ll just put it out every week instead – sorry guys…..

  3. Easy to downsize
We never come close to filling up 95 gallons, so after reading about increased pricing, I decided to downsize.

Filled out online request form 2 days ago and just got email that it’s done.

Thanks, Evanston, for making this quick and easy.
