The City of Evanston this week is hosting Mike Mathews, deputy garrison manager of U.S. Army Garrison in Bavaria Germany, as part of the City-County Management Senior Fellows Program.
The program is a joint effort of the Army and ICMA to provide deputy garrison managers, the "city managers" of Army posts, an opportunity to see how cities are managed.
City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says Mathews will visit city departments, a food truck festival and the monthly meeting of the City's MWEBE Committee.
With no Evanston City Council meeting this week, he'll be heading to Arlington Heights to watch the village board meeting there instead.
Mathews has been deputy garrison manager for two years and during his military career has also served at posts in Kansas and Texas.
He has a master's of business administration degree from the University of Mary and a bachelor's degree in social services from Upper Iowa University.
He has served in Iraq and Kuwait and has received the Army Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
He is married and has two sons, both in the U.S. Air Force.
