The Marathon gas station at 555 Howard St. has been closed this afternoon, reportedly because of an underground gasoline leak.

Evanston fire units and crews from the state fire marshal’s office, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District are on the scene.

Fumes from the gasoline reportedly have seeped into the apartment building next door at 101 Clyde Ave. that houses the Vet Center on its ground floor.

Officials are reportedly monitoring the situation to make sure the fumes don’t reach a level where they might cause an explosion.

Fire officials weren’t immediately available for comment.
