Snow flurries have been falling in Evanston this morning and forecasts suggest we could get patch of somewhat heavier snow before noon.
Donald Cornelius, project management supervisor at the city’s Public Works Agency, says crews spread liquid salt brine on all bridge decks Thursday and that they’re adding it to main roads this morning.
Forecasts indicate temperatures will rise this afternoon to near the freeing mark, and snow on the side streets is expected to melt.
The snow work has delayed street sweeping scheduled for this morning, and Cornelius says leaf pickup operations for the day will depend on whether more snow-related work is needed.
Most city workers are off the job today for a furlough days to help balance the budget. Three more such days are in the proposed budget for next year.
Update 10:54 a.m.: City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says that as snowfall increased this morning, the city shut down street sweeping operations.
“Crews are redeploying into snow equipment and heading out to the snow routes to salt the streets,” he says. “We are in the process of calling in additional staff for sidewalks around our parks and parking lots” and will continue snow operations until completed.

The fine city has become a 8.5 square mile ice rink and everyone who could help prevent the mayhem of evanstonian drivers from demolition derbying each other are all furloughed because of inept financial planning and foresight.

Honestly, I could not believe
Honestly, I could not believe how slippery the roads were. I drive a heck of a car. I drive a crossover SUV that is nearly 2.75 tons. It has Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all wheel drive, and I was slipping and sliding at 5 miles per hour. I hit the curb on Hamilton Street making a left turn at a very slow speed. Fortunately, when I returned home this afternoon things had cleared up. The city’s salting effort was clearly pathetic this morning.

Yep, it was a demolition derby out there this morning. People who forgot how to drive in the winter, and a (very) late start on salting due to furloughs and thinking that they could do sweeping and leaf collection in a snow storm. Rush hour? Ha!

Can’t say we didn’t see this coming. The city wanted their furlough day to save their budget? You piss poor manage your finances and then want to recoup it on the backs of your employees. I hope Wally enjoys the complaints of how well he managed this screw up. City hall wanted their furlough day and they got it. Forced some employees to come in and work and then told them they had to make up their furlough day before the end of the year?!? Learn to read a contract, our union agreed to November 10th. November 10th or nothing. Wonder how much money they actually ended up saving.
