Leaves clog drains, lead to flooding

Flooding this noon on Wesley Avenue at Greenwood Street.

Pedestrians and motorists encountered localized flooding on streets and sidewalks around Evanston today as up to a forecast one inch of rain fell on the city.

Much of the trouble was caused by fallen leaves that hadn't yet been cleared from the roads clogging up sewer grates.

The city's Public Works Agency plans additional street cleaning days over the next two weeks in parts of town to try to deal with the backlog.

The area bounded by the North Shore Channel, the Metra tracks and Main Street will be cleaned next week -- Tuesday, Dec. 4, for the south and west sides of streets, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, for the north and east sides.

The area south of Main Street, from the lake to the canal, will be cleaned the following week --  Tuesday, Dec. 11 for the south and west sides of streets, and Wednesday, Dec. 12, for the north and east sides.

Depending on the weather and street conditions, sweeping may not be possible, but crews will push, mound and remove as many leaves as possible. All parking restrictions are voluntary; there will be no ticketing or towing.
