Most work has come to a halt at the The Link Evanston, the nine-story apartment building under construction at 811 Emerson St.

Gary Gerdes, building and inspection services manager for the City of Evanston, says the work has stopped while efforts are made to repair a support column that showed some signs of failure last week.

Gerdes says a structural engineer has been called in to test the column, which showed some compression and had buckled slightly.

He says work on the site has been halted for about the past 10 days, and he anticipates that, once the city gets a final report on the repair work, it may be able to resume next week.

He says the column involved is made of steel with the core filled with concrete and steel reinforcing rods.

Before the problem at The Link construction site was spotted, Focus Development had hoped to top off the building this week.
