Northwestern University police say a student was robbed near the Foster “L” stop Thursday night.

Police say the male student had just left the Purple Line station about 8:30 p.m. when he became engaged in conversation with a man and two women in the adjacent parking lot of the university’s Engelhart Hall dorm.

The man, who had his hand in a bag, implied that he had a gun and demanded money and the victim’s cell phone.

After the student handed over his money and phone, the man gave the phone back and he and his accomplices fled west through the parking lot toward Maple Avenue.

Evanston and university police were notified and searched the area unsuccessfully for the offenders.

The victim was not injured, but was unable to provide a detailed description of the offenders.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000,
