Evanston and Northwestern police joined forces over the holidays to put extra officers on patrol around the campus to deal with the annual wave of burglaries that hits while students are out of town.
Officers say they received call from a citizen who reported seeing a man break a pane of glass on a rear door of an apartment building in the 2100 block of Ridge Avenue, enter the building and then emerge with a bag of loot.
Police responded and arrested Donald Alan Chastaing, 50, of 1310 Foster St. He’s now charged with residential burglary.
Two other burglaries in the area near campus were reported as residents returned from the holidays. At 2013 Maple Ave. thieves got a notebook computer and two computer game machines. At 809 Noyes St. they made off with a television and a stereo.
Elsewhere in town, police arrested a juvenile Evanston resident who they say was seen fleeing Dewey School at 1551 Wesley Ave. just before 9:30 a.m. on New Years Eve as officers responded to a burglar alarm there. The youth reportedly gained entry to the building through an unlocked window.
