Evanstonian Larry Suffredin was elected to a third term on the Cook County Board Tuesday, defeating the head of Evanston’s Republican Party, Linda LaFianza, by a better than two-to-one margin.

Larry Suffredin, left, shares a laugh with supporters at the DPOE victory celebration.

With 250 or 263 precincts counted, Suffredin had 67 percent of the vote to 27 percent for LaFianza. Green Party candidate George Milkowski had less than 6 percent.

Suffredin said he was cheered by the victory of Democrat Toni Preckwinkle in the race for president of the county board.

“For the first time in years,” Suffredin said, “We’ll have a budget that I can figure out how to support rather than what’s wrong with it.”

He also noted that former Evanston 4th Ward Alderman Steve Bernstein had won election Tuesday as a circuit court judge.
