Evanston students are urged to read regularly during the summer months as insurance against losing ground in their reading skills while school is not in session, and the Evanston Public Library has announced an extensive summer reading program to help make that happen.
Registration for the program opens June 1, both online and at any library location.
After registering, participants will get a reading log to track time spent reading, as well as to log bonus activities and to earn regular prizes and raffle entries.
A program guide to an array of free summer events is available online as well as at all library locations. Some programs require advance registration, while others are drop-in events. This year’s program extends through August 19.
Movies, maker activities, writing, NASA science, book groups, story times, gaming events, robotics, social justice conversations, pride events, travel programs, and more activities are on the library’s summer schedule.
Some programs will take place outdoors in various community parks, while others will be at library locations or offsite. Individuals of all ages and families are encouraged to register and help grow a city of readers.
Parents are encouraged to read the library’s report on the benefits of summer reading that is available online.
Partnering with the library in the summer reading initiative are the City of Evanston, Evanston/Skokie School District 65, the McGaw YMCA, Y.O.U., Ridgeville Park District, and Family Focus.
