Evanston police have arrested one man and are looking for at least two others in connection with a string of three armed robberies on the west side last month.

Lorenzo Lee Garcia, 18, of 2018 Lake St. is scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on Jan. 20 to face armed robbery and firearms charges.

Police say the incidents all happened late at night.

On Dec. 2, a delivery driver said he was delivering food in the 1800 block of Hovland Avenue when a man approached and began to talk with him. Then two masked men walked up, displayed handguns and demanded his money, cell phone and food. After the driver handed over the items the men struck him twice in the face with a gun and fled on foot.

On Dec. 14, a taxi driver was waiting for a fare in the 1800 block of Lyons when a man walked up and began to talk with him. Two other men appeared, one with a handgun. They pulled the driver from his cab, beaten by all three subjects and robbed of his coat, wallet and cell phone before the robbers fled on foot.

On Dec. 15, in the 1800 block of Brown another taxi driver waiting for a fare saw three men approach. One pulled a gun and another jumped into the cab and tried to grab all his money. As the driver tried to flee in his cab, the man with a gun fired four shots hitting the cab twice, but not striking the driver.

Police Commander Tom Guenther says forensic evidence and interviews implicated Garcia in the crimes, which led to the state’s attorney’s office approving felony robbery charges.
