Evanston police have arrested a man for an attempted robbery and a retail theft just minutes and blocks apart on Howard Street Friday afternoon.

Police say officers were called to the scene of an attempted robbery at the Shell gas station at 101 Ridge Ave. where the clerk said a man threatened to rob her and told her he had a gun.

After broadcasting a description of the would-be robber, other officers saw a man fitting the description fleeing from the CVS Pharmacy at 101 Asbury Ave.

A CVS employee told the officers the man had just stolen four cartons of cigarettes from the store.

Officers chased the man and managed take him into custody.

The suspect, who police identified as Patrick Adam Owens, 27, of 200 S. Sacramento in Chicago, now has been charged with felony retail theft and attempted aggravated robbery.

Police say Owens was released from custody of the state Department of Corrections earlier this month.

He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on Friday.
