Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington says a man believed to have killed a security guard at a Walgreens drug store on Chicago’s north side last night was found dead this morning of a self-inflcted gunshot wound in an alley in south Evanston.
The dead man found in Evanston, identified as 33-year-old Dante Simmons of the 1600 block of Jonquil Terrace in Rogers Park, was spotted by a man shoveling snow shortly after 8 a.m. in the 100 block of Clyde Avenue.
Evanston police say Simmons may also have been the person who shot and killed a15-year-old youth in the area between Juneway Terrace and Calvary Cemetery not far from Chicago Avenue after the Walgreens incident. But Chicago police say they haven’t yet confirmed whether he was involved in that incident.
Simmons had been shot in the head with a 9mm handgun that police recovered at the scene. A 9mm gun was also reportedly used in the other shootings.
Eddington says Chicago police believe Simmons was a former employee at the Walgreens store.
Evanson police say a report from a citizen of hearing shots fired in the 700 block of Seward Avenue overnight apparently involved someone who heard the shots that were fired in the shooting near the cemetery, roughly a half mile away.
