Evanston police say a man driving a green van tried to lure a young girl into his van this morning about 7:45 a.m.

The incident happened near the intersection of Asbury Avenue and Oakton Street.

Police Commander James Pickett says the girl told officers that the driver — a white male in his 50s or 60s — made suggestive comments to her, but sped off driving westbound on Oakton after she became alarmed.

The girl, a student at Chute Middle School, reported the incident to school officials, who called police.

Officers have been unable to locate the vehicle, described as a conversion-type van. The incident is being investigated by the department’s juvenile bureau.

School officials are encouraging parents to tell their children to travel together with their classmates, to stay on the sidewalk along main roads whenever possible, and to avoid talking with strangers or approaching a vehicle.
