Evanston police say officers on routine patrol in the 1800 block of Wesley Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday spotted a 16-year-old youth exit an open garage door riding a bicycle.

Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says that when the youth, an Evanston resident, saw the officers, he immediately took off southbound in the alley.

Dugan says that when officers stopped to speak with the juvenile, he admitted entering the unlocked garage and stealing the bike.

He was charged with one count of burglary and petitioned to juvenile court.

Dugan said residents should be vigilant about keeping the windows and doors to their vehicles and buildings locked to reduce the threat of falling victim to a crime.
