Evanston police are searching for a suspect after a teenager was shot about 6:25 p.m. today in Gilbert Park on the city’s west side.

The injured youth managed to cross the street from the park at 1601 Emerson St. to Babylon Foods at 1618 Emerson St. where he was found by police called to the scene.

Update 9:55 p.m.: Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott says the victim, a 17-year-old Evanston resident, was shot in the neck and taken to Evanston Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition.

Several police units searched for a possible suspect in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue, which adjoins the park, immediately after the shooting.

Parrott says the victim was with several friends in Gilbert Park when a single male offender fired several shots from behind some bushes.

Witnesses in the area heard nearly a dozen shots fired, but no other injuries were reported.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information related to this incident to call (847) 866-5000 or use the text-a-tip by texting information to CRIMES (274637) and entering EPD TIP on the message line with the tip information. All tips are anonymous unless the tipster wants to be known.

  1. Come On City Council – Deal with important issues

When is Evanston City Council going to start doing something about all of this gang violence? Instead they are working on a plastic bag ban. Kids get shot almost every week in Evanston (or right over the border).

We need a new council and new City manager… people who are going to make smart decisions and deal with problems!
