Police say they’ve charged a 15-year-old Chicago youth with attempted robbery after he allegedly tried to steal an 80-year-old Evanston woman’s car on Ridge Avenue in south Evanston.

Cmdr. Jay Parrott says police were called to the scene in the 200 block of Ridge Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Monday by the woman who said she was getting out of her car after parking it when a teenager approached and demanded her car keys.

She told officers that when she refused, the youth tried to block her from walking away and again demanded the keys.

She refused and started to yell for help, and with that, Parrott says, the would-be robber fled on foot.

Parrott says police located a subject matching the description provided by the victim a short time later in the 400 block of Asbury Avenue, and that the victim positively identified the youth as the person who’d tried to rob her.

He’s now been charged with robbery and was transported to the Cook County Juvenile Dentention Center.

Parrott says police also learned that the teenager had an outstanding warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle.

  1. Kudos to the woman.

It's probably always best just comply — your life is worth more than a car — but kudos to the woman for standing her ground.
