We’re counting down the stories Evanston Now readers looked at most as the months went by through 2018. Here’s our second installment.
10. Alderman shows potty mouth in late-night debate (July 24)
A dispute over alley paving turned ugly early this morning when Alderman Tom Suffredin, 6th Ward, resorted to vulgarities in criticizing Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward.
The dispute began after Suffredin proposed that the city find substitutes for two alleys in Rainey’s ward that had been chosen by staff to be included in a grant application to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District that would have covered 60 percent of the paving cost.
9. Body found by Metra tracks (Feb. 15)
Metra trains on the Union Pacific North line through Evanston were delayed for hours after a body was found along the tracks near Dempster Street and Sherman Avenue.
Evanston police were called to the area shortly after 8 a.m. after someone on a passing train noticed what appeared to be someone sleeping by the tracks.

8. Downtown streets blocked for police activity (Jan. 26)
A number of downtown Evanston streets around the Sherman Plaza complex were blocked off for police activity for more than two hours this afternoon.
Police say a woman had been threatening to jump from the top floor of the 12-story parking garage. The incident was first reported about 1:30 p.m. and police finally succeeded in persuading the woman to leave with officers at 3:42 p.m.
She was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

7. Former Evanston mayor Lorraine Morton dies (Sept. 9)
Former Evanston mayor Lorraine Morton died Saturday evening, three months short of what would have been her 100th birthday.
Her death was announced early this morning by Mayor Steve Hagerty, who said, “Last night our city lost a remarkable woman.”
Morton was the city’s longest-serving mayor, serving four, four-year terms, as well as the city’s first African-American mayor.

6. NU junior dies (Feb. 26)
Evanston police say a Northwestern University junior died at St. Francis Hospital about 9 a.m. Sunday morning, nearly 24 hours after she’d been taken to the hospital by friends.
Police and university officials say the cause of death for Kenzie Krogh, a student in the School of Education and Social Policy from Durham, North Carolina, has not yet been determined.
In May the medical examiner’s office ruled that Krogh’s death was a suicide caused by alcohol and prescription antidepressants.
