There’s a company new to Evanston whose employees share a common mission—to help you sleep better at night.

Just relocated from Wheeling to a small office within a stone’s throw of Evanston Township High School, REM-Fit and its half-dozen employees hope to develop a yawning relationship with people of all ages who often wonder what’s happening to them eight hours a night (or day), says co-founder Jared Bell, 33, from his workplace off the alley at 1711 Darrow Ave.

REM-Fit is a spinoff from his father’s company, Protect-A-Bed, which was recently sold off to another company, so Jared and his younger brother, Warrick, found a three-level space on Darrow for their  employees, including a videographer, a graphic designer, head of ideation (marketing), customer support, execution, and technology.

Born in South Africa, Jared grew up in Wilmette, where he attended high school at Loyola Academy before getting his business management degree at Purdue University, where he was a member of the Men’s Rugby Football Club.

Although he lives in Glencoe, Jared chose Evanston as the site for REM-Fit because of its transportation accessibility for its employees, as well as a location that is welcoming to new small businesses. One of his first acts, he said, was to join the Evanston Chamber of Commerce

The ZEEQ Smart Pillow works with a Smart Phone app

As for its product line, REM-fit is particularly proud of its ZEEQ Smart Pillow, which interacts with an app to play music, monitor the user’s snoring, and sound an alarm in the morning that will wake the user without waking his or her companion.

A recent story on the CBS Television morning show quoted a research study that claimed that 62 percent of people like to listen to music to help them fall asleep, as it helps them to relax and to block out noises that might keep them awake.

The REM-Fit product line consists of three product categories: The Rest, the Energize, and the Motivate collections.

The Rest Collection’s Hybrid adjustable pillows feature innovative technologies that regulate body temperature during sleep, adjust to any comfort level, and protect against bacteria growth that are prone to happen in all pillows.

The Energize Collection’s waterproof fitted sheets are designed to help the sleeper focus on catching those recovery ZZZ’s by ensuring they get a restful night’s sleep. The sheets are knit using premium materials, from man-made fibers to all-natural Tencel fiber that is created from wood pulp. The sheets help regulate body temperature by wicking moisture away from the body, creating a cool and dry sleep environment.

The Motivate Collection’s line of products are sleep and activity trackers, which focus on analyzing sleep and activity, not just showing your number of steps or time slept. These products provide you with a score based on the efficiency and effectiveness of both your sleep and activity combined.

By focusing on both activity and the sleep needed for recovery, REM-Fit Active enables you to track your sleep and activity and contribute to living a healthy lifestyle.

Bell says the company’s marketing strategy is to go direct to its customers via its website, rather than selling the items in stores.

Now that the company has successfully made its move to Evanston, Bell said, it is planning an official grand opening celebration after the holidays.
