Thunderstorms sweeping through Evanston this evening have caused power outages along Central Street, mostly west of Green Bay Road, and led to numerous reports of downed tree limbs in roadways.

The power failure hit shortly before 9 p.m. About 1,200 customers reportedly are affected by the outage, and firefighters were dispatched to help several people stuck in an elevator in a building at 2500 Green Bay Road.

ComEd says it hopes to have power restored to most of the affected homes by about 10:45 p.m.

Tree limbs were reported blocking the 1600 block of Emerson Street, Emerson at McCormick Boulevard and Ridge Avenue north of Lincoln Street among other locations.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch that remains in effect until 10 p.m. tonight and a flash flood warning that will remain in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday.
