Tool thieves target cars at home improvement stores

Evanston Police say they’ve seen an increase in the theft of tools from vehicles in the parking lots of stores frequented by contractors and do-it-yourselfers.

Cmdr. Brian Henry says patrons at such stores, especially construction workers, should secure their vehicles before entering the store and keep expensive tools out of sight. “If your vehicle has a toolbox be sure it is locked at all times,” Henry says.

Henry says a substantial number of such thefts involve cars that have been left unlocked.
