News in Evanston in May was mostly a chronicle of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the city's residents punctuated by the death of one of the community's best known citizens from the disease. But a protest over police violence and an outbreak of looting broke through as the month was ending.

New jobless claims in state rise slightly

New jobless claims filed in Illinois last week totalled 72,816, according to a report out this morning from the U.S. Department of Labor. That's up marginally from an adjusted total of 72,671 recorded the previous week as the COVID-19 crisis continues to impact the state's economy.
