Poetry competition entries sought

The Evanston Public Library invites submissions to the Twenty-ninth Annual Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards, judged this year by Averill Curdy.The competition is open to all adult and high school age Chicago-area poets. There is also an elementary school category open to Evanston elementary school students. Library gets rehab for kids

Work is scheduled to begin later this month on a $2.3 million renovation of Evanston's main public library designed to make the place more appealing to young people.Library Director Neal Ney tells the Chicago Tribune that in many ways it's "a very revolutionary direction" for a library.

Children's theater to audition kids and adults

The Evanston Children's Theater will hold auditions Jan. 9-13 for its spring production of "The Emperor's New Clothes."For this show, the theater is expanding its auditions to include adults age 55 and older. As in the past, auditions are also open to Evanston youth ages 10-14 living in zip codes 60201 and 60202. Auditions will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Thursday, Jan. 11, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave.
