Oh, the challenges of life as a Rubber Ducky!

Hurled upon the waters of Evanston’s Dawes Park lagoon with 300 of your comrades. A number on your belly.

Told to compete with all the others to race around the lagoon.

But you have no motive power of your own, your fate left to the whims of the waves churned up by guys with canoe paddles and hip boots and waders.

Watched by scores of children hoping their duck will be first to cross the finish line.

But the challenge is all for a good cause — raising money to help fund care for the live animals at the Evanston Ecology Center.

Estimates are the event this afternoon, sponsored by the Evanston Parks and Recreation Department, raised perhaps a $1,000 to help keep the critters who need to eat in feed.

And the ducks were heard to cluck that they’d be back to take the challenge again next year.
