skating

Although city park crews have started flooding the three outdoor ice rinks, temperatures this weekend are expected to climb near 50 degrees and will make outdoor skating unlikely for the foreseeable future, the city warns.

But indoor skating will be available at the Robert Crown Ice Complex, at Main Street and Dodge Avenue, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays on the main rink.

Additionally, ice skating on the studio rink at Robert Crown will be available from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Mondays, 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays.

Admission at Robert Crown is $6 and skate rental is $3. The annual skate pass is $100.

As weather conditions improve, residents can call (847) 859-7822, ext. 8, for a recorded message about outdoor ice rink conditions at Ackerman Park, Central Street at McDaniel Avenue; the lagoon at Dawes Park, Sheridan Road at Church Street; and Baker Park, Forest Avenue at Keeney Street.

The city reminds residents that sledding, tobogganing, skiing, and snowboarding at the large hill in James Park, popularly known as Mt. Trashmore, is prohibited by city ordinance and violators are subject to ticketing by police and park rangers.

Sledding on the small and intermediate hill at James Park, however, is permitted at the user’s own risk. No tobogganing, skiing, or snowboarding is allowed. Users assume full responsibility for determining if conditions are safe for sledding. Adults are responsible for supervising children in their care.
