A fire broke out at the Advanced Disposal transfer station at 1711 Church St. in Evanston about 9 o’clock this morning.

The blaze was inside the large building where trash is shifted from garbage trucks making local collections to semi-trailer trucks that haul the refuse to landfills.

With a light breeze blowing from the east, smoke from the rubbish fire drifted over the residential neighborhood just to the west of the transfer station.

Fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze within about a half hour.

Traffic was blocked on Church Street by fire equipment.

Update 11:25 a.m.: Fire Chief Brian Scott says there were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
