In the midst of all the rain yesterday, a big parkway tree split open in the 900 block of Sherman Avenue in Evanston with the branches falling against the front of a house.

Evanston Now reader Eliana Chavkin, who sent in the photo, says a city crew came by later in the day, cut up the fallen limbs and removed them.

Chavkin says the tree had been rotting and apparently was infested with carpenter ants. That plus the weight of the water from the rain and a some wind … and it finally collapsed. Reportedly nobody was hurt, and apparently no serious damage was done to the house.
