The Evanston Public Library recently received two bequests totalling $420,000 from Evanston residents who named the library as a beneficiary of their estates.

The bequests were made by George Ariffe, a former professor of English at the College of DuPage, lover of poetry, former high school teacher, and resident of The King Home in Evanston, who died last year, and Allen H. Howard, a former professor of psychology at the University of Illinois and a lifelong Evanston resident who died in 2009.

They will be invested in the library’s endowmen to benefit the Evanston community for generations to come, allowing the Library to invest in key areas of need.

The gifts will support the professional development of library staff, provide funds for collection development and programming innovation and help promote the value of literacy for the entire community, said Library Director Karen Danczak Lyons.
