A fire that struck a building at 1804 Washington St. in Evanston this evening displaced two residents of the home.

Fire Division Chief Kimberly Kull says the residents, and their cat, had managed to flee the building by the time firefighters arrived at 7:29 p.m.

Kull says they found smoke and fire coming from the basement of the split-level home, located just a few doors away from Fire Station #4, but managed to put the fire out within a half hour.

The American Red Cross was called to provide food, housing and social services for the displaced residents.

Fire companies from nearby communities were called into assist in battling the blaze.

Kull says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
