Update 5:50 p.m. 8/4/14: The drivers of both motorcycles involved in a collision Saturday night on Emerson Street at Hartrey Avenue in Evanston now are facing felony drunk driving charges.
The two men remain hospitalized at Evanston Hospital,
Police Cmdr. Diane Davis says the accident occurred about 8:40 p.m. as the two motorcycles were traveling west on Emerson.
Davis says both men were thrown from their bikes by the impact. Smith, who was wearing a helmet, sustained a non-life-threatening cervical fracture and multiple facial injuries.
Johnson, who was not wearing a helmet, is in critical condition in the intensive care unit with brain bleeding and facial fractures, but Davis says, is expected to recover.
Both men now are each facing one felony county of aggravated driving under the influence and two misdemeanor counts of DUI.
They’re scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Aug. 15.
