U.S. Bank, which closed its branch at 525 Main St. in Evanston last week, is in the process of closing 22 of its Chicago area locations — about 14 percent of the full-service branches it had in the area a year ago.

Chicago Business reports the closures are part of a trend for banks that are shuttering retail branches as customers handle more routine banking transactions online.

The move leaves U.S. Bank with two Evanston branches — at 1325-1355 Howard St. and at 1999 S. Campus Drive.

Paul Zalmezak, who heads economic development efforts for the city, says a bank official hasn’t yet shared plans for a new use for the Main Street space.
