So the Evanston Substance Abuse Prevention Council will visit local stores that sell alcohol on Wednesday, May 11, to place stickers on doors and alcoholic beverages to try to discourage the adults from doing that.

So the Evanston Substance Abuse Prevention Council will visit local stores that sell alcohol on Wednesday, May 11, to place stickers on doors and alcoholic beverages to try to discourage the adults from doing that.

Project Sticker Shock is sponsored by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and stickers were developed by the commission’s public education unit.

Stickers warning about the penalties of furnishing alcohol to minors are placed on multi-packs of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol products that tend to appeal to underage drinkers.

ESAPC, the Evanston group, includes participants from the police department, PEER Services, McGaw YMCA, Baha’i Temple, local businesses and youth.

Materials used in each establishment will be selected based on discussion with the business owner or manager and an ESAPC representative. The ESAPC plans to do Sticker Shock twice a year in May and October.

How kids get booze

The survey asked youths who reported drinking in the previous months how they’d obtained the liquor. Multiple responses were permitted.

ESACP organizers say the Sticker Shock campaign should help address the sources shown in pink in the chart..

    Don't restrict it to alcohol alone. smoking paraphernalia and cigarettes are just as bad.

  2. Middle-Aged & Elderly showing Name & Address for wine.

    Soooooooooooooooo…. where is the return on investment (much less the effectiveness) for all the programs, stickers, manpower and so-called Good Citizen intent, if wine-beer-liquor is statistically available to minors via 37% of adult friends over 21 making the purchase AND via 36% of Minor friends with wine-beer-liquor at home but without parental consent  AND via 26% of Minors with wine-beer-liquor in own home without parental consent?

    If we Over 21, middle-aged, elderly and very elderly happen to share our wine-beer-liquor with Minors by proxy, by default or by intent, then how many programs, stickers, manpower hours and Good Citizen intent do you (all) believe that it would take to stop us?  And, again, where is your return on investment (ROI)… statistically?  How does showing my Name and Address at 64 to a potential jerk manage to prevent or even abate that dilemma? 

    Worse, do you honestly perceive that we Middle-Aged and Elderly citizens will bother (BOTHER!!!) to show our Name and Address to strangers?  Employees whom you do not trust to demonstrate DISCERNMENT and COMMON SENSE, now get to see our Name and Address?  You believe that we should accept this as simply "mildly annoying" (Paul W. on Main Street)?  Not as outrageously intrusive? 

    And how few miles outside of Evanston do you think that we drive to buy wine without showing our Name and Address to anything less than law enforcement?  How few miles do you think that we drive outside of Evanston to avoid it's VAT on petro?  Small money to me.  Small money to Evanston.  But why reward petty and provincial city management with the privilege of MY continued business at the risk(s) of MY privacy, MY anonymity, MY prerogative… under existing law.

    In Upstate New York, we also care about proper guidance and protection of our youth and adolescents.  We use discernment and common sense.  We don't legislate self-important egoism to do it.
