A white van drove through one of the plate glass windows of Evanston’s South Branch Library this afternoon.
A passerby takes a picture of the accident scene with his cell phone.
Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber says the driver of the van apparently lost consciousness before the vehicle crashed through the window on the Lee Street side of the building, located at 949 Chicago Ave.
The incident ended with right front wheel of the van resting inside the library building.
Klaiber says the driver was treated by fire paramedics at the scene and was transported to Evanston Hospital.
The south branch, which is scheduled to close permanently on Feb. 26, is closed on Mondays, and Klaiber said no one was inside the building at the time of the accident, which happened around 3 p.m.
Klaiber said there was no structural damage to the building and workers had been called to board up the broken window.
