Work to clean and repaint the Davis Street Metra viaduct is underway in downtown Evanston.

Half the viaduct is now shrouded in tarps as workers remove loose paint.

Since the more than century-old viaduct was last painted in the 1970s, it’s guaranteed to have lead-based paint, requiring the precautionary containment measures.

The project had originally been scheduled to get underway this spring, but an updated work schedule was announced last week.

Once work on the Davis Street viaduct is completed, in about a month, crews are scheduled to tackle the Metra viaduct at Dempster Street.

Signs warning of the lane closure at the viaduct on Davis are posted as far east as Chicago Avenue.
