The City of Evanston Water Division has determined that there is a water main leak in the 800 block of Church Street downtown. The water is not surfacing and is flowing into the sewer main.

City officials say crews are working now to determine the location of the break and a traffic lane will need to be blocked off.

Officials say the crews will try to schedule any water shut off, if one is needed, to cause the least amount of inconvenience.

  1. Water Department Poor Planning?

I have raised the question over the years about the water department burying old pipes when projects were done. That is there was no planning when we did the down town to replace all the underground when TIF funds were available.  Money was wasted on studies, salaries and art work.

Also does the city have the capacity to provide enough water in a fire to the high rises they allowed to be built in the down town,

Everyone needs to realize it has been the city of Evanston practice to take money out of the water fund over 3 million dollars every year, and transfer it to the general fund. Thus millions dollars of water rate payer money that was available to replace the 100 year old pipe was misused.

Interestingly enough the water department still wants a 30% rate increase!
