City officials say a major water main break on Oakton Street has forced the closure of the east-west artery between Dodge and Grey avenues in Evanston this evening.

City spokesman Eric Palmer says the road closure is expected to last until about midnight.

Palmer says the break was not related to work already underway to replace water mains on that stretch of the street — but that the replacement project was scheduled because of frequent water main breaks in the area.

Palmer said he didn’t yet know whether tonight’s problem has meant that any homes in the area have lost water service.
